I deeply value the role that immigration has played, and continues to play, in shaping American history. We are a nation composed of freedom-loving people from throughout the world and that is what makes us exceptional. But as much as I respect immigration, I equally respect the need for law and order. That is why I was particularly frustrated to see the State Legislature approve driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants in the waning, last hours of the 2013 legislative session. Governor Brown has said he will sign the new law, called Assembly Bill 60, in the coming days.
- Giving taxpayer-funded financial aid for illegal immigrants at public colleges and universities;
- Making it more difficult for local law enforcement to cooperate with federal immigration authorities and enforce the law.
- Allowing immigrants to serve on juries even though there is no shortage of jurors; and
- Permitting immigrants to serve as election poll workers even though they cannot vote.
